About Me

Jo-L, FGA, DGA, MA Jewellery, Jewelsmith

Jo-L designs and creates sustainable jewellery.  She has recently been exploring narrative jewellery with a focus on text-image interaction, and visual narratives inspired by comics.  Her collection, 'A Private View' investigates how the audience contributes to the narrative, and how the artwork can contribute to the audience's retelling of their own story.

Three silver people prepare to visit a private view, while the paper artist, exhausted, props herself up against cardboard boxes, taking a deep drink, and saying, 'Phew, just finished!'  Underlying all the interactions are the little people's insecurities and anxieties, the harm that has been done to them and their coping strategies.

Jo-L also produces work rooted deeply in local woodland and coastal landscapes.

She is a gemmologist with a special interest in unusual stones and stones with unusual inclusions.  She is a Fellow and Diamond Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, a member of the Association for Contemporary Jewellery and a Member of the Guild of Jewellery Designers.

Jo-L cares about sustainability and fairness in jewellery.  Whenever possible she uses stones which can be traced back to mines with ethical practices and metal which is sourced in environmentally sound and fair ways - for example, Fairtrade or recycled gold.
